The House That Built Me

This story starts back as far as I can remember. I was fortunate to grow up on a little farm, in a small town in Arkansas. You know Miranda Lambert's song, The House That Built Me? Well, here's that house for me:

Beautiful, right?! What makes it even more special is that my dad built it and my mom designed it. I grew up admiring both of their talents. My dad can literally build anything, and my mom has an incredible eye for putting things together. You know those types that decorate for every season and their home always looks like a Pinterest board? That's my mom.

Being around this my whole life, I have just always loved crafting, decorating, and most recently building. In fact, when I was a little girl, I can remember completely rearranging my room about every week on my own. I would sketch out the layout of my room on a piece of paper and then draw in where furniture would go. Looking back now, I love how my parents never got onto me for that and gave me the creative freedom to make my room my own (as long as I just kept my room clean).

As I got older, I started admiring my dad's craft more and more. It always intrigued me how you can take a pile of material and turn it into a masterpiece that stands the test of time. I have had the opportunity to work with my dad on some of his building projects. While the majority of the time I was just the assistant or runner or cleaner upper, I shadowed enough to make myself believe I could do some building on my own. Here's my first farmhouse table. You can read about it here

Fast forward to today and this desire to create has just gotten bigger and bigger. I absolutely love taking an old piece of furniture (especially one that belonged to one of my late grandparents) and giving it new life. There is not a room in our house that you walk in that you can't find a furniture piece without a cherished story behind it and I love that. In my mind, anyone can recreate a picture out of a magazine with shiny new pieces, but the real treasure is creating a home that shows character and is unique to you.

Over the years, I've learned so much about DIY projects by learning from others and quite frankly just trial and error. Thank goodness for my husband who always encourages a new project and constantly builds me up when I feel what I create is not perfect. He has played a hand in getting me equipped. He bought me a bandsaw my first birthday we were together and most recently a compound miter saw for our anniversary!

When it came to deciding on a name for this little hobby, I knew I wanted it to be representative of my upbringing. While I have years of great memories, there is one that really sticks out. Every morning when my sisters and I would come downstairs, my dad would always say "Mornin' Glory." So Mornin' Glory Home was created.

This blog is for anyone wanting to try their hand at DIY, but not sure how to get started. I'm no expert, but I love helping others create and be proud of what they have made, so I'm glad you're here. Follow along as I give step-by-step tutorials on house projects and throw in a few sweet pictures of our goldendoodle, Marlee, along the way.
